GREG SOMERVILLE

...stitched to everything in the universe...

My training and early work as a biologist/ecologist has led me to use the insights of science, especially ecology and chaos theory, in my artistic output. The imagery I utilise is grounded in the patterns, textures and minutiae of the bioregion in which I live. They are also informed by my knowledge of biological structures, the energies and relationships found in ecosystems, within the microscopic and macroscopic.

Textiles, drawing, painting and photography have been presented in over 40 group and solo exhibitions.

Processes I have used in my exhibition work are: the ones of quiltmaking (patchwork, quilting, applique, embroidery, trapunto), dyeing, painting and printmaking techniques (screenprint, woodblock, collagraph, digital, monoprint) leading to more sculptural forms. Whilst much of my work is textile based, I do draw upon my photographic and drawing practice.

The present exhibition at the Falkner gallery in Castlemaine, Victoria is both the first comprehensive showing of my drawings anywhere, and a sort of welcome to my new home in Castlemaine. Paula and i moved from the Blue Mountains, west of Sydney, 11 months ago.

My main artistic showing has been in the field of textiles, but ever since my late teens I have been drawing mandala designs. These have been a source of calmness and focus in my life. The designs have become more organic over time and, for me, more consistently represent the ideas of interconnectedmess and complexity of the world. These present ones are drawn from the last 15 years, refined and completed in the last year or so. They inform my textile work in their imagery and themes. More recently, I have embellished, quilted and embroidered prints of my drawings.
